Notice text:

Dear ALC staff,

I would like to update all staff in response to the evolving COVID situation in the Northern Territory.

As you would be well aware, the Northern Territory Government is continuing to test and monitor potential exposure sites within the Greater Darwin Area, and we are by no means in the clear yet.

For all of the latest updates, please visit Coronavirus (COVID-19) (nt.gov.au).

In light of this, I would like to advise all ALC staff of the following:

  • Anyone wanting to leave Groote Eylandt now should reconsider, as you may not be able to return until directed it is safe to do so.
  • For anyone who is currently off Groote Eylandt, please do not return to the Eylandt until we advise you that it’s safe to do so.
  • Please be advised that inbound Darwin-Groote flights are now restricted to be accessed only by Essential Workers and checked by NT Police prior to departure from Darwin.
  • If staff are approached by Groote Traditional Owners currently in Darwin please advise them we are not currently able to assist them to return to Groote Eylandt until the Darwin lockdown ends (currently at 1pm Thursday 1st July). Please refer them to Larrakia Nation staff in Darwin for assistance programs that are available.
  • If you are receiving calls from stakeholders wanting advice on how to proceed with COVID restrictions, please refer them to the NTG website and instruct them to follow the advice on the NTG website.

While this may cause inconvenience for some, it is important that we all follow the health advice in order to keep our community safe.

If you have not already done so, I encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, as this is our best defence against the virus! It is planned to offer an accelerated vaccination program for the rest of this week through the Alyangula GEMCO Vaccination Centre. Bus services will be available to pick up and return for community members with a barbeque meal provided at the Cen

COVID-19 VACCINATION ROLLOUT UPDATE

The COVID-19 vaccine rollout was originally planned for Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island communities in late April; however, dates were deferred due to changes in the national vaccine rollout.

The NT Government has confirmed that all residents over the age of 16 of Groote and Bickerton are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Essential frontline workers and key staff of local Groote organisations will be offered vaccinations on 13 and 14 May 2021. Emails with booking information will be sent to those organisations invited to participate.

GEMCO will operate the Alyangula GEMCO vaccination program for its workforce and any Groote Eylandt residents wishing to book in, from 18 May – 2 July. GEMCO will provide further information to the community about this next week.

The broader NT Government led vaccination program for the Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island communities of Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra and the satellite communities will take place as below. Bookings are not required and transport will be provided to assist people to get to the Clinics. All people over the age of 16 are being offered the COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Umbakumba – 22 and 23 June 2021
  • Angurugu – 21 to 25 June 2021
  • Milyakburra – 24 June 2021
